You can enroll in Medicare after your 65th birthday
Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) starts three months before your 65th birthday, includes your birth month and ends 3 months after your 65th birthday. You have a total of 7 months to enroll in Medicare.
Social Security & Auto Enrollment in Medicare
Are you currently receiving social security benefits?
If you are already receiving benefits from Social Security you will automatically be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.
Are you not currently receiving Social Security benefits?
If you have delayed your Social Security or are planning to delay, you need to contact your local Social Security office or Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE, to enroll 3 months prior to your 65th birthday.
Enroll in Medicare Part A only
If you are still working, over 65 and covered by group health insurance you may only need Medicare Part A.
Can I enroll in Medicare online?
You can use the SSA online application to enroll in medicare if you:
- Are at least 64 years and 9 months old;
- Want to sign up for Medicare but do not currently have ANY Medicare coverage;
- Do not want to start receiving Social Security benefits at this time; and
- Are not currently receiving Social Security retirement, disability or survivors benefits.
